9 Common Factors Which Cause Infertility in Women

The process of falling into pregnancy is highly complex, both physically and emotionally. From the time of falling into pregnancy till carrying it to the full term is delicate, and there are several factors which could adversely lead to infertility. Some of the commonly seen scenarios which cause infertility in women include:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):

  • This is a condition where a woman’s ovaries and, in some cases, adrenal glands start producing excessive androgens hormones.
  • The increase in these hormone levels adversely affects the development of ovarian follicles and release of eggs during ovulation.
  • This ultimately results in the formation of fluid-filled sacs or cysts within the ovaries, making them infertile.

Primary Ovary Insufficiency (POI):

  • The is a naturally occurring condition where a woman’s ovary stops producing hormones and eggs from a young age.
  • Such women are almost unable to ovulate, and even if they do, their ovarian problem causes abnormal levels of ovarian and pituitary hormones, making it difficult to get pregnant.

Endometriosis:

  • This is a condition where the endometrium cells, which usually line the interior of the uterine cavity somehow are found outside the uterus instead. Although scientists cannot precisely tell how endometriosis leads to infertility, some of their theories say that endometriosis may be leading to:
  • Changes in the structure of the female reproductive organs
  • Changes in the lining of the abdomen, which is called the peritoneum
  • Adverse effects on the embryo’s ability to implant properly

Infections:

There are several types of untreated infections which could cause infertility in both men and women. Some of the known infections include:

  • Gonorrhoea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Menstrual Cycle Problems:

  • The process of the menstrual cycle involves multiple stages, intending to prepare the female body for pregnancy.
  • Any kind of issue in any of the stages can directly affect the level of fertility in the women creating problems when trying to fall into pregnancy.

Deformities in the Reproductive System:

  • The presence of abnormal tissue in the fallopian tubes or uterus causes problems in the reproductive system as blocked fallopian tubes are unable to let the eggs move from the ovaries to the uterus.
  • They also prevent sperms from reaching the egg, reducing the chances of its fertilisation.
  • Structural problems which directly or indirectly interfere with the implantation process may also lead to infertility.

Implantation Failure:

When the fertilised egg fails to implant itself in the uterine wall to initiate a state of pregnancy, it is known as implantation failure.

There are several factors which could cause this problem, such as:

  • Existing Embryonic defects
  • Endometriosis
  • Progesterone resistance
  • Scar tissue in the endometrial cavity

Uterine Fibroids:

  • These are noncancerous growths that form inside the uterus which are believed to cause symptoms of infertility.
  • It is also believed that their growth may be genetic and fibroids which are located in the uterine cavity or those that are larger than 6 centimetres in diameter are more likely to lead to infertility.

Autoimmune Disorders:

  • Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus, thyroiditis, or rheumatoid arthritis, are known to affect fertility.
  • This is because either they or their medications are believed to cause inflammation in the uterus and placenta.
  • They also cause the body’s immune system to attack healthy body tissues which usually are left ignored.
