Surrogacy

Surrogacy is an excellent option for childless couples who wish to have their biological child but carried and delivered by another woman. Although adoption is a good option, the pleasure of having their own child through surrogacy presents an intense feeling of happiness to couples. In India, surrogacy is allowed under a strict legal framework and SaiShree Infertility Hospital, the best surrogacy center in Pune, ensures all the statutory rules and regulations are conformed with.

What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is the legal arrangement between a woman and a childless couple or single parent to carry and deliver a baby of their biological genes. The surrogate mother, also known as a gestational carrier, carries the embryo created out of the eggs and sperms retrieved from the couple, and hence the delivered baby belongs biologically and legally to the couple.

Why to opt surrogacy?

SaiShree Infertility Hospital offers Assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) such as IUI, IVF, ICSI, and several other procedures to treat infertility of childless couple. But inspite of our best efforts, nature gains upper hand on few occasions and thereby closes the gates of assisted pregnancy. But with a mission to make couples as proud parents, we also suggest surrogacy to our patients as a last resort.

A couple may choose surrogacy when all other medical options have been exhausted. For instance the woman may not be in a position to carry a pregnancy for several reasons:

  • Serious medical problems in mother where pregnancy is contraindicated
  • Have undergone removal of uterus (hysterectomy)
  • Presence of heart disease which might hamper the process of pregnancy and pose serious risk factors.
  • Have experienced repeated and multiple pregnancy losses
  • Presence of genetic defects or physical injuries that makes it impossible the woman to carry pregnancy.

Again couples resort to surrogacy when all other ART including IVF have failed. Even in the case of single parent, surrogacy seems to be a viable option with the help of a donor.

1What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy is more of an agreement in which a woman agrees to carry a child on behalf of a couple who cannot conceive due to infertility issues. The surrogate gets pregnant through an embryo transfer, i.e., the male partner's sperm and female partner's eggs are fertilized in a laboratory setup to create an embryo. This embryo is then placed in the surrogate's uterus to carry out the pregnancy. After the delivery, the child's intended parents will get their parental rights, whereas the surrogate will not have any legal rights over the child.
2What is the difference between gestational and traditional surrogacy?
In traditional surrogacy, the woman carries a child conceived by her own eggs and donor sperm. After giving birth, the woman may not be given any parental rights, but she will be genetically linked to the child. In gestational surrogacy, the woman carries a child conceived by other couples/intended parents. The embryo is developed using IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization). Therefore, the surrogate mother won't have any legal rights or genetic relationship with the baby.
3Is the baby biologically related to the surrogate?
In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate mother won't have any genetic link with the child as the sperm and eggs used to develop an embryo will be provided by the intended couples. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother uses her own eggs to conceive with donor sperm. Therefore, she is linked genetically to the baby. However, legally, she won't have any right over the baby.
4Who chooses surrogacy as a way to become parents?
Couples who face difficulty conceiving a child or single parents of all types of gender can opt for surrogacy to experience parenthood. These couples include: • Couples with infertility problems • Prospective single parents • Same-sex couples • Any woman who feels insecure about carrying her pregnancy healthily
5What requirements do surrogates have to meet?
Many women have generous hearts to lend her womb for someone else's baby. However, there are many legal criteria to be fulfilled by the surrogate. This screening is very crucial and should be done under the supervision of a surrogacy professional. You can contact the surrogacy centre in Pune to learn in-depth about surrogacy, as the criteria vary in every country or state. The surrogate mother should be in good health - emotionally, mentally, and physically. It is very important to verify whether the woman is 100% sure to become a surrogate mother.
6What type of surrogacy is permitted in India?
In India, only gestational surrogacy is allowed by the government in which the surrogate mother carries a child conceived by the intended parents via IVF procedure. The surrogate holds no parental right on the baby after the delivery. Also, she won't be linked genetically with the baby because the child's intended parents provided the eggs and sperm for its fertilization process.
7How should one choose a surrogate?
Before finalizing a woman for surrogacy procedure, make sure she is 21-35 years old. Our surrogacy centre in Pune will provide in-depth information on the woman, such as health history, medical history, and other credentials to help the intended parents find a trust-worthy surrogate mother. Also, ensure that the woman is doing this voluntarily out of a generous heart. She does not have more than two pregnancies in her lifetime and that the pregnancies should be successful without any miscarriage or health complications.
8How long does it take for the entire surrogacy process?
It may take 15-20days to examine and evaluate the women who are eligible for surrogacy. The IVF treatment in Pune at Saishree IVF may take another 15 days. After the embryo transfer, you need to wait for the next 12-15 days to confirm the surrogate mother's pregnancy.
