PCOD and Infertility

Women afflicted with this disease usually have several questions in mind, such as, how can I get pregnant naturally? Will there be any complications associated with PCOD and pregnancy? If I choose IVF to get pregnant, what is the success rate for PCOD patients? What are the IVF protocols for a woman with PCOD?

To answer these questions, one should first understand what PCOD is? What are its symptoms? What causes PCOD?

Polycystic Ovary Disease is a hormonal disease common in women. It disrupts her ovaries' healthy functioning, further increasing the risk of health complications associated with irregular periods, infertility, and ovarian cancer. Saishree IVF is the most-renowned polycystic ovarian hospital in Pune. You can connect with our fertility specialists today.

What Causes PCOD?

The ovaries are responsible for creating female sex hormones and a very small amount of male sex hormones. It helps with the healthy egg development in the ovaries during each menstrual cycle. PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) results in causing an imbalance in producing these sex hormones. In PCOD, the ovaries start producing more male sex hormones (androgens).

The imbalance of hormones stops the ovulation process, cause pimples, acne spots, and more facial hair.

Another factor that causes PCOD is immature follicles. The follicles are sacs within the ovaries that contain eggs. During a woman's ovulation period, one or more mature eggs get released from these follicles, and fertilization takes place. An immature follicle(s) does not release eggs, and the woman finds difficulty getting pregnant. The follicles develop tiny cysts in the ovaries, thus the name polycystic ovarian disease.

Sometimes, PCOD runs in the patient's family. A woman whose closest family members have been diagnosed with PCOD is at higher risk of developing the disease in her lifetime.

When to consult a doctor?

As we mentioned earlier, PCOD cannot get cured, but there are treatments available to manage the symptoms. However, women often find out about her PCOD case when trying to get pregnant or have visited her gynecologist for other treatments.
