While infertility is a common health problem and almost 45% couples face this issue, it has been stigmatized since ages and often women have been looked down upon who are not able to bear a child. Doesn’t matter which partner is suffering from infertility, a couple goes through a lot of sentiments and can be disheartened because of the negative results.

Not aware of the various advancements in the medical sciences in treating infertility, couples were discouraged and had accepted this condition as their destiny. But with the growing consciousness about infertility treatment, couples were again gaining hope to start a family.

One of the most popular and successful infertility treatments, IVF or better known as ‘Test Tube Baby’, is a boon for couples who are suffering from infertility. Women who have damaged fallopian tubes, immunological problems, endometriosis, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are ideal candidates for IVF treatment. The process involves conceiving a child outside a women’s body thus getting its name, “in-vitro” (outside the body) treatment.

Steps:

Follicular monitoring and IVF hormonal Induction: Before the ovaries are stimulated with hormones, they are made inactive to get a better response to the medication. After injection, the ovaries are sonographically monitored to confirm suppression. Meanwhile, the patient is asked to oversee her menstrual cycle and she is checked for estrogen levels.

Ovarian Stimulation: Post the decreasing hormone levels and thinning of uterus lining, the ovaries are stimulated by giving Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) injections.

Fertilization and Embryo transfer: Once the eggs are mature, they are collected from the ovary and incubated with sperms of father in a dish. Fertilization occurs and embroys are formed in 3-5 days, and then the embryos are transferred into the uterus of the mother.

Embryo transfer and Implantation: Monitoring of eggs takes place until it is confirmed that the fertilization and cell division is taking place. Once done, the fertilized eggs are then considered embryos. In the following 3-5 days of fertilization, the embryos are then transferred into the woman’s uterus. Once the Embryo are transferred in the uterus, oral medicine and injection are given to the patient and pregnancy test is done after 15 days

Risks: Though it is one of the safest procedure, IVF treatment has it’s own side effects:

  • Chances of multiple pregnancies intensify with the use of fertility treatment.
  • Risk of ectopic pregnancy in IVF treatment is 2-5%, where pregnancy occurs outside the lining of a woman’s uterus
  • Other side effects of IVF include mild cramping, constipation, breast tenderness, mild bloating etc.

Success Rate:

Studies have shown that, though IVF treatment is safe and effective mostly, it’s success rate depends on the age of the mother. As the woman’s age increases, the chances of getting pregnant with the IVF treatment decreases by 5-10%. The live birth IVF success rate for women under 35 who have started an IVF cycle is 40%.
